8 Points You Should Know to Stop Destructive Chewing of Your Dog

Regular Chewing of your pet dog might have annoyed you so many times. If you really want to stop it, the first to understand is that behavior is natural for dogs which almost all dogs exhibit. Dogs do not select what to chew, they cannot simply recognize the value of the items and they chew as they are dogs.

As humans we should
1. find answers to causes of chewing
2. provide the dog with chewing options
3. reduce his interest on chewing
4. Restrict the access to chewable things.

Those are your responsibilities.

* Why dogs chew?

* Once they feel lonely or bored.

* To get your attention when you neglect him.

* When they feel hungry. Take care about him.

* Because of the anxiety, if you are separate from him for a long time this

situation may occur

* Dental problems - Gum pain also make them chew almost anything. Symptoms are chewing only with one side of his mouth, refuse eating, appearance of brown and yellow tartar in teeth and bad breath. Consult a veterinary doctor.

* Puppies will chew frequently during teething period.

How to Avoid Destructive Dog Chewing

Don't try to restrict your dog from chewing anything for the rest of his life. You only required getting him away from chewing something destructive for the dog and you. If your pet dog has taste your expensive pair of shoes, or your favorite furniture it is destructive for you. On the other hand if he chews a power cord it is destructive for the dog. Both should be avoided. Stop it soon as possible otherwise it will become a habit.

1.) Separation anxiety can cause dogs to exhibit chewing especially when he is alone at home. Damages to doors, windows and furniture in occasions you are long time away from dog, often implies the separation anxiety. Provide him with a crate run. A suitable dog trainer will help you in treatments.

2.) Make sure that your pet dog is having sufficient physical exercises as well as mental stimulations. It will make him active and refreshed all the time so he is no more interested about his chewing. You can have some dog training tips from a proper dog training book

3.) Make your home chew-proof. Do not leave anything chewable on the floors. Especially do not leave any of your valuable or something can be harmful to the dog when he chews, such as power cords, within the reach of dog. Protect all power cords using proper covers which cannot be damaged by the dog.

4.) Buy some chew toys for your dog. Definitely it will work for you. There are toys in different tastes and select the ones that the dog loves so much in shape and taste.

5.) Be careful not to allow your loving dog to chew something similar to your valuables. As an example, if you allow him to chew a piece of old cloth or a pair of old shoes today, he will definitely taste your expensive pair of new shoes or one of your favorite suits tomorrow. Train him to chew only the toys. You must use behavior therapy for your dog to get better result.

6.) Give the dog a firm order 'No!' once you catch the pet in chewing one of your house objects and should replace it with another chew toy that he loves. You have to do it within few seconds of catching the dog otherwise he wont understand why you are doing so. It's better to praise him when start chewing the newly introduced chew toy. It will promote him to chew only the toys in the future.

7.) If you have noticed the dog's favorite in house chewing items, apply some non toxic off flavor substances. So he will find it as an unpleasant experience and will stop chewing that particular object.

8.) Obedience training will immensely help your pet dog to improve his behavior. An experienced dog trainer will tackle even serous problems. This kind of a training will train your pet to chew only his toys.
